With the recent trend of healthy smoothies and detox drink, i had to bring this recipe to the blog. A Venezuelan tres en uno is all you need: one glass for a great morning. Beet, carrot and orange!
My great-grandmother lived 98 years, and she was energetic and happy until the last moment. She used to drink tres en uno almost every day of her life.
She had a whole-foods diet and not because of a trend. She was from a poor little town, and back there things — and of course food— were much simpler.
Tres en uno means literally “Three in one”. This juice is made of raw beets, raw carrots, and orange juice. Those are the three main ingredients of this multivitamin drink.
When I was little—well, in age because I’m still 5’2—my father and my grandma were constantly trying to make me tres en uno drinks.
I hated it with all my soul.
The big problems were beets. In fact, until this day I’m not a fan of beets. But I can eat it in a couple salads and I learned to love my tres en uno.
With time I learned to tolerate the beet flavor and oddly now in my 24 years I kind of like it.
Now when we talk about orange juice I’m a complete orange juice junky. My perfect breakfast consists of a big glass of fresh orange juice and a pancake mountain. I love, LOVE to start my day this way.
In a tres en uno, the orange flavor cuts the overpowering sweet flavor of the carrot and the beets. This creates a perfect balance and gives a soft punch of acidity that brings all flavors together.
Sometimes in the summer when the oranges are extra sweet I like to add the juice of one lemon for a little bit more of acidity.
So before starting the recipe —- spoiler alert: it’s just blending the three ingredients — I need to look at the benefits of this healthy drink.
- Beets: They are low in calories and high in nutrients and vitamins. They are particularly great to control blood pressure and It contains a lot of dietary fiber that will improve your digestion system.
- Carrots: Improves eyesight, lower blood pressure and regulates sugar in the blood.
- Oranges: Loaded with vitamin C and it helps to lower blood pressure.
See where I’m going? Tres en uno is a MUST if you want to control blood pressure. It has a lot of potassium and magnesium that helps to dilate your blood vessels and lower the blood pressure.
Why I’m so focused on this? Because recently I started a personal campaign to stop the increase in my blood pressure.
High blood pressure and diabetes run in my family and I’m determinate to stop this trend.
So I really hope that this simple yet amazing drink will help you to keep your health on track.
- 1 beet
- 1 carrot
- 2 cups orange juice
Peel the beet and the carrot and cut into small pieces.
Pour the orange juice into the blender. Toss the beet and the carrot and blend in high speed for a couple minutes.
Strain the juice. Serve.
