This French petit gâteau recipe is the finest dessert recipe for a fine dining night at home. Delicious mini chocolate cake with a soft melted chocolate surprise.
This is my favorite dessert in the whole world. An ooey-gooey chocolate mini cake, that when it’s open releases mouthwatering melted chocolate from heaven.
It is also my main option when I have guests in my house that I want to impress, and I don’t have the time to bake for hours. This dessert will only take you 20 minutes (5 minutes preparation + 15 minutes baking).
You can serve it unmolded on a plate (for an elegant presentation) or just in the individual ramekin.
Because I’m such a lazy baker I usually serve them in the ramekin. Fewer dishes to clean!
The famous petit gateau or popularly known as the chocolate lava cake it’s a French dessert that literally means small cake. It combines the techniques of a cake and a sufflé.
The result is a mini cake with a melted inner that must be served hot and preferably with a portion of vanilla ice cream (the day I took these photos I ran out f ice cream *sad face*). Believe me, the best part of this decadent chocolate dessert is the contrast of the hot cake with the cold ice cream.
This dessert may have variations like including liquors like whiskey or bourbon in the mix to make it a little boozier. Also, the ice cream can be whatever flavor you prefer or you can swap it with fresh raspberries.
The trick for the perfect petit gateau is the temperature of the oven. If you let the mini cakes too much time into the oven you will get a brownie, but if you take the cakes out of the oven too soon they just will crumble. So, set a timer and do not get distracted!

I love to mix all and make a delicious mess:
